Conservation Studies

The practice has worked on behalf of local planning authorities to analyse the character of areas of countryside, villages and historic parts of towns and then to set out policies for their protection and enhancement. When appropriate, opportunities for development are identified that will both consolidate and enhance the appearance of the environment.

Jersey Island Plan
Marlfield is a small village on the west side of Clonmel in Tipperary. The practice was appointed by Tipperary S. R. County Council to prepare an Action Area Plan for the settlement which dealt with the following issues:-
•   protection of the character and appearance of the village and its rural
    setting;
•   exploitation of opportunities for recreational activity;
•   provision of a limited amount of residential development.

Comprehensive townscape and landscape assessment informed the proposals which included improvements to pedestrian access, the provision of a public park, the sensitive conversion of derelict and underused farm buildings and the identification of sites for a number of individual, high quality dwellings in landscaped grounds and small estates.

Design guidance was also offered for the new development covering topics such as the positioning of buildings, building form and materials and architectural detail.
